In 2004, Gordon Kirkland was named as the first Canadian writer to join the faculty of The Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop at the University of Dayton in Ohio (Erma's alma mater.) He returned in 2006 as a keynote speaker, and will be back for the third time in 2008.

The conference, which runs every two years is, in Kirkland's words, "too much fun to be legal in some states." He adds that it "takes a year to get ready and a year to get over" as the explanation for it only running every second year.
